Stephen Pinnell – The Cunning of 10,000 Little Kittens

This exhibition brings together the last 15 years of work by Stephen Pinnell, showcasing an evolving visual language built from found objects, clipped text and imagery drawn from many sources. Influenced by figures as varied as Robert Rauschenberg, T. S. Eliot and David Shrigley, Pinnell’s works blur the boundaries between painting, collage and assemblage.

Rooted in the idea that shared systems of meaning are increasingly fractured in contemporary culture, the exhibition invites viewers to piece together meaning from fragments through juxtaposition rather than explanation. This reflects ideas explored by philosopher A. N. Whitehead.

Thought-provoking, playful and sometimes unexpected, the exhibition offers a fresh way of seeing the world, including the unlikely appearance of a jammie dodger grappling with the problem of human existence.
