How to propose an exhibition at Dean Clough

The Dean Clough Galleries operate an open submissions policy. All artists are welcome to propose exhibitions and can expect to be judged by the Gallery Committee on merit.

Dean Clough is not a 'commercial' gallery, in the sense that it does not seek to match exhibitions to a notional marketplace. It welcomes liaisons with individuals no less than with public bodies and academic institutions.

The galleries have a bias towards wall-hung pieces and tend to favour work produced in the North of England but in neither case is this exclusively so.

Exhibition proposals are usually reviewed on a monthly basis by a committee that includes the Curator, Assistant Curator, Gallery Director and Arts Co-ordinator.

In most cases submissions should consist of:

1) A description of the proposed exhibition (outlining themes and number of pieces)
2) A CV
3) Representations of the work (eg photographs/quality laser copies/catalogues)

Hard copy is generally preferred. Material submitted on CD does not lend itself readily to group scrutiny. Please note that a mere invitation to view an artist's website is not regarded as a submission!

How to apply to become a Dean Clough Studio Artist

Dean Clough is presently reviewing its policy towards the Studio Artists and hopes to improve and extend its involvement with working artists. Until this
review is complete we will not be taking on new artists.

Artists who are nevertheless keen to be considered for space in due course, are welcome to send a CV and images of their work to the arts co-ordinator who will hold them on file.

How to be considered for the Jazz Season

Send CDs and proposals to the Arts Co-ordinator (see contact details above). We negotiate both directly with performers and through agents.

Jazz nights usually happen on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays and start at 8.00pm. Performances in the Crossley Art Gallery take place 'on the flat' and can be treated acoustically, although we do provide a sound engineer and quality PA system. Artistes can be accommodated on site at the Travelodge Hotel.

How to propose performances in the Viaduct Theatre

Contact should initially be made via the Arts Co-ordinator (see details above).

The Viaduct Theatre defaults to a 'traverse' layout, with raked banks of seating on either side of the performance area. The maximum number of seats is 310. If played to one side of the traverse (i.e. by dropping a canvas in
front of the smallest seating bank) the seating capacity is reduced to 160.

The theatre can be converted to a true end-stage arrangement, which yields a seating capacity of 200-230. There is a significant costing to achieve an end-stage layout, although this has been offset in the past by careful forward planning.

The theatre has fully equipped dressing rooms, a basic lighting rig, and a moveable PA system.

Please note that the Viaduct Theatre performance area is a stone floor. It is not suitable for dance performances.

Contracts for touring productions are normally negotiated on a box office split, rather than a straight fee.
